Is the race season over

Is there any point entering events. Realistically will there be a season this summer?

I'd guess that the first half of the year is a total loss. Maybe late summer/early fall events have a chance.

I'm still pretending the mid to late summer races will go on but I just think I'm fooling myself. Thank god I just spent a bunch of money on a second bike I don't really need.

Wonder if the Tour de France will happen.

That’s where my head is at right now as well. Hoping this follows similar pattern to the flu in that warm weather kills it. If it’s still spreading come July then the season is over.

I wish there was an easy and cost effective way to test for the anti-bodies to Covid19. A lot of people are probably going to contract this virus, but not be certain they've had it because they won't be sick enough to seek medical attention and be tested for an active infection. As the infection rates ramp up, people without serious symptoms are going to be told to convalesce at home and leave the hospital space for those who are having more serious reactions. Some who are infected won't even get sick at all, particularly young people. I think it would accelerate a return to "normalcy" if people knew they were no longer at risk of getting or spreading the virus. Otherwise, I'm not sure what the signal is going to be that it's OK to "come out of the bunker," so to speak.

How does this impact Kona. I mean if you resume races by mid summer, how do you make up for all the qualifying slots? All the early season races have passed and all those people have lost their chance to qualify for Kona. What happens to all those slots? Do they all transfer to the later season races? if so, those races will quickly become VERY HIGH DEMAND for all KQ type athletes.

I can't imagine what this is doing to peoples seasons, messing up their build taper, etc!!!

I hate to face the prospect of a NO KONA this year? That would suck!!!

One issue that has surfaced is swim training, this spring. Many pools are, or will close. If they still have a spring race (Tulsa for me), chances are high, that many of us will go into it with a lack of access to a pool, and improper
swim fitness.

the season is over.

But it's OK, we can still race virtually.

And, we can still enjoy exercise and training.

But get ready, things will be peaking July thru October, and life will get pretty interesting.

Let's be kind to each other and be connected with our communities, at a social distance that is ;)

I tend to agree, but here's to hoping.

Just done a 21 mile off road race. Circa 600 people.
Run with extra (sensible) precautions:-
- not congregating inside a small hall before the start
- food at checkpoints served to you and via tongues - no dirty snotty racers hands in the tubs of food.
- take your own cup to be filled (should do that more to cut the shedload of waste at Tris anyway)
Etc.
Think that'll turn out to be the last race for some time here in the UK for me amd many others. Next week's 14 miler (with about 1000 or more entries) just got shoved back to September.

Mine is pretty much over, save for maybe some local events that are small and may crack on. After 2 years of having a fall IM and training through the brutal summer here in Houston I decided no more fall races. Time to get back to doing offseason in July/August, it only makes sense.

Slowman made a good point yesterday in his front-page piece about signing up for races now that he plans to do this summer to support the local RDs who are probably losing some sleep these days worrying about what might happen this summer.

My big race of the season is scheduled for late May in France. At this point, I'm just hoping that instead of being cancelled it will be rescheduled in the fall. My guess is that there will be smaller tris (<500) held in the U.S. by the end of the summer.

I’m signed up for Tremblant on August 23. It’s a crap shoot, I think Canada’s response to this has been very good. That being said it’s changing rapidly day to day, so who knows. I’ll keep training. If it is canceled I’ll do my own Ironman right here at home.

Good luck to everyone out there, stay safe and healthy.

I think a good attitude... I'm following similar. I'm on for IM Chatt at end of sept... so figure I will either have a six month build from right now... or 18 month.

Quite honestly, doesn't matter to me.

My race team cancelled a gravel event yesterday scheduled for today. It had maybe 140 people registered. Today, 70 people showed up and rode anyway. I'll let people know in two weeks if we're alive;)

It is my impression that whats being done today is trying to limit the spread so that hospitals are not overrun. I would think at some point things should return back to a somewhat adjusted normal. I am hoping my first event of the season in June a local Olympic distance triathlon will not be impacted.

Sure, happy to enter as long as there are iron clad refund or postponement clauses. And the RD honors them.

You don't, you just go back to the mid 80's when they said the course maxed out at 600 to 800. After all, it is still pretty much the same exact course, so what happened??

But don't worry, if there is a Kona this year, they will find a way to make sure that nearly 3000 folks get invites. They can just do a random drawing of all the folks that entered cancelled races, and there you have it. Maybe put up another 50 eBay slots, maybe that will drive the average price to under $25k per entry, more sponsor slots, military, CEO, etc. Rest assured, if Kona happens, it will not be with the few 100 that are already in as the only ones towing the starting line...

I highly doubt that we are completely done for the year. Right now it is important to reduce the spread to slow the curve. However, Covid is here but life will go on. Our economy will keep moving and events will happen. There might be some pockets that stay closed a little longer but in 8 weeks things will start to open up and in 12 weeks things will be moving, but just much smaller and slower than in the previous years. My guess in June is the new "beginning" of the season.
